Savage claims that United stars are 'playing for their careers'

Robbie Savage has brutally claimed that some players are ‘playing for their careers’ after their 3-0 defeat to Sevilla on Thursday.  

The Red Devils crashed out of the in the quarter-finals after goals from Youssef En-Nesyri and Loic Badé wrapped up the win for the Spanish side.

It comes as a big blow to United, who had been chasing a potential European trophy in ten Hag’s first year in charge of the club.

It was an underwhelming performance from United on the night, who would have been confident in securing a result prior to suffering the 5-2 aggregate loss.  

And after the game, BT Sport co-commentator Savage did not hold back in his remarks about the performance from the Premier League outfit in Spain.

Speaking after the match, Savage said: ‘It’s been a terrible night for Man Utd, a terrible night for David De Gea. It is awful. 

‘Think of the five goals, two own goals in the first leg, gifted the first and third in this leg. No excuses. This us up there with the 7-0 v Liverpool.’

‘Some of these players are playing for their Man Utd careers – is there any way back? I think it is going to be real tough for some of these players to recover. 

‘This game has just shown if a few of their main players aren’t fit, the squad is miles off challenging.’

Harry Maguire and David de Gea were two of the players singled out for criticism after Sevilla striker Youssef En-Nesyri struck twice for the hosts to help win the tie. 

United will be back in action when they travel to Wembley in order to take on Roberto De Zerbi’s Seagulls in the final four of the FA Cup on Sunday.

The Red Devils will be hoping they can win a double in ten Hag’s first year in charge, following their Carabao Cup success earlier in the year.

Scholes felt it was a disappointing night for his former side, as he told BT Sport: ‘Look it’s a difficult night. They didn’t handle the aggression from Sevilla tonight.

‘When you come to these places you expect to take examples from your most experienced players. Right from the very first minute de Gea kicks the ball out and then it went downhill from there.
